Astranis Space Technologies Corp., located in San Francisco, California, was founded in 2015 for the purpose of manufacturing and operating next-generation, low-cost telecommunications satellites to connect the four billion people who do not have reliable access to the internet. The company’s first-generation MicroGEO broadband satellite is launching in 2022 to provide internet connectivity for Alaska that will more than triple available bandwidth across the state. The 400-kilogram satellite will operate from geostationary orbit utilizing a proprietary software-defined radio (SDR) payload that is reprogrammable in space to support evolving customer requirements. Four additional MicroGEO satellites are in production for launch in 2023 with three under contract and multiple parties in advanced stages of negotiations for the fourth. The 250-person company has raised over $400 million to date including a $250 million funding round in April 2021 at total valuation of $1.4 billion.
